Clover after clover, the small field of grass in the graveyard was being torn up. Quinn sat in the middle of it all, face glowing red and fists pounding into the elastic earth. "I just walked out on her... My best friend's family decides to move away, and I don't even try to say goodbye," his hand swiftly came in contact with his face as blood spurted from his nose. Lately, times had been changing and families continued to bicker, abandoning Quinn and his best friend in the middle of a large feud. Yesterday had seemed to drag on into forever....
--
"Hiya Quinn!" Selene sauntered over to Quinn's forever messy porch, the one with the light always flickering. Quinn nodded in her general direction, but continued to lean against the railing with a blank stare. His emerald eyes were glazed over and held no life in them, he was ready for it, the end of it all. Selene stuck her elbow in his side to catch his attention but only received a mumbled "stop it..." Hands on hips, Selene confronted the boy with the plain bags under his eyes. "I'm sure word has gotten out, but yeah, I'm moving away. Don't blame it on yourself or anything Quinn, it's not your fault and it probably never will be."
"I never thought it was," in truth, he really did. He released a sigh and flipped his blonde fringes out of his face only for it to come back. He, too, put his hands on his hips and turned to face the fuming girl. ''Look, I only have a problem with the fact that you waited until the last minute to even tell me. You're my best friend, I swear on my dog's grave that you are, but it just leaves me a little disheartened that you leave me hanging like this..." it was unlike Quinn to cry, let alone in front of a girl, but things were getting more tense by the second and his throat was giving out and choking up.
''Jeez Quinn! Do you even know how hard it is to tell your best friend that you're moving away. I thought you'd be a little more supportive of me!" she tried hard not to cry, but all attempts were in vain. "It's not like you liked me anyways." Her last few words resonated in Quinn's body, making a last stop on his heartstrings. How would she even know something like that? "N-No, it's not that or anything... Whatever, I give up," Quinn submitted to the obviously more powerfully emotional girl. Back when they were still kids, it seemed pathetic to admit, but Selene always won in fights in arguments. "Quinn... Just come see me tomorrow, 'kay?" from the depths of her jacket pocket, she removed a makeshift note made from binder paper. From the light glinting in he eyes she appeared afraid, or scared to have even made a note in the first place.
"It'll help remind you to come see me. I know that you know where the train station is... but in case you forgot. See you around!"her tennis shoes flopped on the pavement and sunk into the gravel, melting at the tips. Quinn forlornly glance at the note but then turned his neck up higher to watch her leave. Even after she left, he stared at her home, a place he used to seek refuge in when violence hit the household. A home away from home despite the location. Tears rolled down, but his fingers refused to budge to wipe them away. Letting it all out... That's all he could do.
--
A smooth delicate breeze washed over Quinn's sallow skin. He basked in it for a minute, ever so carefree. Selene was not on his mind for once and he enjoyed each moment. If he dwelled on it for much longer, it would tear up all his insides. The grass beneath him crumpled under his body while he rolled about. "Ow!" he briefly cried out when a sharp pain struck his left thigh. Awkwardly he reached down into his pocket and grabbed ahold of the note she had left for him. He cocked his head while he unfurled the torn piece of paper.
''Quinn, I'm sorry that I never told you I was leaving. You meant a lot to me and I knew it was a bad idea to do something as cruel and harsh as that. But I never wanted you to dwell on my departure so we could spend our last moments together as good ones. We've had a lot of memories and I'm glad you decided to spend your time with me. Maybe it's better that you don't see me leave. There was no one that got me like you did, and to see your hurt face melt into the sea of faces as my train speeds by, I would feel bad for the rest of my life. I'll make new friends but none will ever be like you. You saw through my plan, so let me go, and find someone Quinn. Find someone to make you happy."
He knew what he had to do as he spoke the last line aloud. She had seen through him and all the times he blushed when she complimented him, when he had always saved spots for her on the bus for field trips, and how he chose to spend time with her at lunch when he should've went in for class to make up tests. There was still something there, he thought. I have one last chance and I can't blow it. Quinn had brought along his bicycle in case he didn't feel the need to walk home. With an agile leap, Quinn had flown over the handlebars and sat backwards on his bike. And within mere seconds, his feet pounded on the pedals as the bike soared down the pathways in the cemetery.
His blonde and black hair danced in the wind while his face remained tight with determination. All who saw could never understand what had made this boy so crazy, but in his heart he was perfectly right. Dangerous turns and narrow alleyways near became Quinn's demise, but like every hero, he prevailed. The train station and a graffiti covered train loomed overhead. Not even stopping his bicycle, Quinn threw himself into a set of stairs and took off running. "Sir, do you have a ticket?" one lady made an effort to stop him. Just keep on running, he thought, and you'll make it.
A whistle furiously rang throughout everyone's eardrums, the sound causing many to cringe. The train squealed and rocked back and forth, ready to take off. "No! Don't go yet!" Quinn screamed as he collided with a pair of doors leading outside to the waiting platform of the train. His spindly fingers tightly squeezed through the door, causing one old gentleman to release his baggage in a hurry. "Selene!" Quinn's head spun around while he tried to catch his breath. Impatient feet scuffed the floor and windows unlatched and fell on the train. "Quinn?" a sheepish voice called.
The lights in Quinn's eyes shone brightly when he spun 180 degrees to match the voice to a face. It was exactly who he imagined it would be, for he could not help but smile widely at the sight of her. Time slowed down and the color of the world seemed to fade away to the corners of their eyes. His arms stretched out to catch that which he could not, to hold up the love he had desperately tried to hide. He wouldn't walk away until she knew... From the top of his lungs, he cried for her, triggering her to cry out with half as much power.
"You are my only one! Ran my whole life into the ground and I can't get up when you're gone. There's just no one like you! My only one..."
But all Selene could do was wave. Wave until each tear plummeted down the lines of her rosy cheeks. A quick motion from her hand to her lips, Quinn leapt up to catch a kiss, one that would never be. Nearly missing, he slapped it to his face and smiled. Selene giggled but the giggling ceased and went back to the frown that could not help but resurface. His legs carried him all the way to the end of the platform and to her bare hands. Her parents sighed for they could do nothing but feel the regret of tearing them apart as their hands so briefly touched one another's. Quinn tripped and skidded as the world faded to black, gasps were exchanged and Selena disappeared into the horizon.
"Broken this fragile thing now... And I can't, I can't pick up the pieces."

They don't know nothing about redemption.
They don't know nothing about recovery.
